What we expect from seminar students (2021).
Knowledge and Skills for Starting Research
- Each member should begin by considering what they want to do and by pursuing work that can make someone, somewhere, happier.
- A basic foundation in mathematics and programming is helpful.
- We do not require deep prior expertise; we welcome people who are willing to learn.
- Logical thinking and the ability to turn ideas into reality are skills that remain valuable throughout life.
- Although many recent projects involve machine learning, we have pursued a wide variety of research with students. Bringing an interesting and important question is a strong starting point.
- Examples of student-led projects include a long-distance relationship support system, an automatic eye-drop robot, an automatic summarization system, a VR system that recreates sound and wind, and network and information-security research on attack-scenario association.
- Research activity is not imposed; it requires independence.
- We use the Ohgigaoka Campus as our research base so students can devote substantial time to their work.
- The regular group seminar meets once a week.
- Students are expected to make their own research plans and carry them out.
- The lab is also a place to take on challenges beyond research.
- Freedom and responsibility go together.

Research Supervision
Research pursued only as a hobby will be rigorously challenged. In seminar discussions, we emphasize whether a topic addresses an academically unresolved problem and whether its results can benefit someone. Lab members, including faculty, discuss concepts thoroughly to improve the quality of the research. When logic is incomplete, we revisit it as often as necessary. Because a concept alone is not proof, we also value building systems that demonstrate and validate the concepts students develop.
